Im on here because I made 500k last year, and just got screwed by my company with their new pay plan. Yes, its possible to make that much, but then they deem all that new business you just brought in theirs, and pay you crumbs to maintain it the following year. The company had a division with a narrow focus on a certain product. I was in the med device business 8 years before joining this company. I wound up being in the right place, at the right time, and through a lot of hard work and persistence, got a huge account.
The territory did sub 200k in revenue the year before i got there. So because the quotas were so small, 90% of my business was over quota, so i got the higher commission rate. I figured I would be rewarded for doing over 2 million when the company barely expected me to do over 200 thousand.
When the new compensation plan was rolled out, that 2 million i did the year before, income is now capped at under 100k. Thats it. Ill get paid a higher percentage for growth, but only on the growth revenue, not the whole thing. It felt like a giant kick in the teeth. Try growing a territory that just did over 2 million to over 3 million. Even if I hit the incredulous new quota they gave me, Im going to make 150k less then i did last year. If i made 500k last year, and grow my business and hit my quotas the following year, shouldnt common sense dictate Ill make more money? Its greed, and a fundamental misunderstanding as to how to incentivise your top producers. This is the business, and the games they play.
These mgrs are greedy ignorant fools. They tell you to go out there and "build your own business", If you do, its yours for the first year. After that, theyll pay you crumbs, as if all that new business is baked into the cake and is on autopilot. After all the smiles, and encouragement, and pats on the back, youre nothing but a grunt to them. I trusted these guys, and wanted to feel like i was working with a company that had my back, and rewarded hard work, talent, and sales success.
Honestly, what sales business do you know of, where you go out there and go a great job, **** away your numbers, and then the next year, do more in revenue, but earn less money - 150k less. I thought this business had integrity. It doesnt. Maybe its the company. I wanted to feel great about the company I worked for, and be incentivised to go out there and grab more business. But now I feel betrayed. The moral, if youre interviewing at a med device company, dont just concentrate on the current pay plan. Ask them what the pay plan was the year before, how it changed for top producers, and how you are paid the following year on new business you bring in.
